Winter in Cape Town and my thoughts are captured by images of island life.
This is where I want to be.
Truth be told, this is where I want to live forever.
On a previously uninhabited island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mozambique.
Banyan Tree Group plan to open a new ultra-luxury resort in the second quarter of 2022. This Sanctuary for the Senses will be situated on the private island of Ilha Caldeira, 11km off the coast of mainland Mozambique. An absolutely idyllic tropical sanctuary soon to be the only certified, internationally branded 5-star resort in Mozambique.
The island is located within the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, Africa’s largest marine reserve and home to Mozambique’s intact living corals, and green and hawksbill sea turtles.
In keeping with Banyan Tree Group’s commitment to the environment, the resort will be 100% solar-powered and all water is desalinated on the island itself.
Accomodation is in an exceptional sanctuary-like setting, consisting of 40 private pool villas inspired by diverse local cultures and nature’s soothing colours. Endless views of the Indian Ocean provide a rare opportunity to connect with unexplored lush tropical surroundings and sparkling beaches formed from sandstone.
The Marine Conservation Centre will include a diving school, and the adventurous can explore the shipwreck of the historical Dutch MS Brastagi that sank in 1947. Other activities to while away the days are whale watching, kayaking, scuba diving and exploring islands within the Archipelago.
As a family destination, the resort will offer a kids club.
Dining choices are set to be exquisite, with the 270º ocean view fish and seafood market restaurant, the all-day dining restaurant, and the in-villa or destination dining options.
In true Banyan Tree style, there will be a focus on creating seasonal dishes which are regionally sourced and locally curated. The lounge and cocktail bar will serve up classic drinks with a local twist and tantalizing Petiscos tasters.
The Banyan Tree Spa, beauty salon, yoga pavilion, and fitness and wellness centre make this the ultimate destination to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul .
Due to the secluded setting of Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira, there will be a helipad as well as an arrival and departure jetty on the island. Guests will fly to Nampula International Airport, ex Johannesburg, and then on to the private property at Larde before being transferred either via helicopter or boat to the island.
The estimated opening date of Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira is the 15th July 2022
